The Barbless Stalking Bug Selection.
There is no better time to visit your local stillwater for a bit of stalking. When stalking there are really two schools of thought, either you go and find the fish, or you let the fish find you - most fish in small stillwaters do laps, so it's not long before you will see them!
My favoured setup for this type of fishing is a 5 or 6 weight rod, a reel with a decent drag, a floating line to match the rod and 9 foot of straight through tippet of 6 to 8lb direct to the fly. As we will not be turning over these stalking bugs, it pays to have a straight through. Once you find your target fish, the important thing is to get the fly down to where they are. In crystal clear water it is very difficult to judge depth, it pays sometimes to cast you fly well before the fish appears and then raise the fly into the path of the fish as it is patrolling round.
